Allergy Symptoms
An “allergy” is an increased sensitivity to foreign substances called allergens. Cat dander, ragweed pollen and dust mites are examples of allergens. The allergic person makes more of the “allergic” (IgE-type) antibodies against these allergens. These antibodies attach to the surface of mast cells. The mast cells, which contain histamine and other chemicals, line the tissues of the nose, eyes and breathing tubes. When allergens combine with these antibodies on the surface of the mast cells, the mast cells release histamine. The histamine causes the majority of the symptoms.
